From NFL partner to Super Bowl headliner: Jay-Z takes the Super Bowl stage

After years of Roc Nation helping shape the NFL’s halftime show, the company’s founder, Jay-Z, will headline it for the first time.

Jay-Z will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show on 14 February 2027, his first performance at the game. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced the booking late on 26 October in the United States, which was 27 October in Nairobi. The game will be played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The partnershipA role built over years

The announcement brings Jay-Z to the stage at the centre of a partnership his company has helped shape since 2019. The NFL’s original description said Roc Nation would advise on artist selection for major league performances, including the Super Bowl, and support its Inspire Change social-justice work. The league’s latest announcement names Roc Nation as executive producer and strategic entertainment adviser for the show, with Hamish Hamilton directing.

That makes the booking unusual: Jay-Z is the artist taking the stage and the founder of the company involved in producing the show and advising on performer selection. In 2024, halftime producer Jesse Collins described the headliner choice as “a decision that Jay makes.” The NFL’s public description says Roc Nation advises on selection; the agreement and internal approval process are not public. The available record supports describing Jay-Z as a central decision-maker, but does not establish that he had sole authority over his own booking.

The timing also gives new context to a comment Jay-Z made in January 2024. Asked about performing himself, he told Entertainment Tonight that it could feel “selfish to pick myself too early,” before adding, “Maybe one year.” It was an open-ended answer, not a promise. Commissioner Roger Goodell said in the announcement that he had asked Jay-Z to perform whenever the moment felt right.

The anniversaryA 30-year story returns to SoFi

The booking arrives as Jay-Z marks 30 years since Reasonable Doubt, released on 25 June 1996. Roc Nation framed JAŸ-Z 30 as a year-long celebration of the album and his career. The concert run included three sold-out nights at Yankee Stadium and dates in London and Paris before two shows at SoFi Stadium on 23 and 24 October. The second SoFi date was the finale, two days before the Super Bowl announcement.

The same stadium hosted the final anniversary concerts and will host Jay-Z’s first Super Bowl appearance less than four months later. That calendar connection is striking, though it does not prove the concerts were arranged as a lead-in to the halftime booking.

Jay-Z’s career milestones include 25 Grammy wins, a 2021 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and, in 2017, becoming the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Reasonable Doubt entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025.

What comes nextThe guest list is still open

The announcement confirms Jay-Z as the performer; it does not name guest artists, a set list or a performance concept. Any prediction about collaborators, including artists who joined his anniversary concerts, would be speculation for now.

For Jay-Z, the booking brings him back to the stadium where he closed his anniversary concert run and puts him on the Super Bowl stage for the first time. The exact selection process and the music he will perform remain unknown. The confirmed story is a first Super Bowl appearance, a landmark album year and the NFL’s biggest music stage converging around one artist.
